Whole Grain Chocolate Chip Cookies

Why can't we live in a world where chocolate chip cookies are good for us and vegetables are bad?  (Is that too much to ask?)  A cookie filled with white flour, butter, sugar and chocolate - could they  really be that bad for me?  (Don't answer that.)

I set out to create a chocolate chip cookie that wasn't quite as nutritionally void as the traditional chocolate chip cookie.  My goal was to make a cookie that tasted just like the butter filled, sugar rich cookie that I'm used to but more nutrient rich.

I started with a recipe for Whole Grain Chocolate Chip Cookies from Good and Fresh magazine.  I altered the recipe a little because it called for barley flour and oat bran and I didn't have either on hand.  (I didn't want to postpone my cookie making until I could get to the store either.)  This is my version of that recipe.

Whole Grain Chocolate Chip
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup oats
1 cup almond flour
1/4 cup wheat bran
3 Tablespoons milk powder
1 1/2 baking powder
1/4 baking soda
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375.  Beat eggs in a bowl.

Stir in sugar, oil and vanilla.

Stir together dry ingredients.

Add egg mixture to the flour mixture.

Stir in chocolate.

Use scoop to portion out dough onto silpat lined baking sheets.

Bake 10 minutes.

And now the moment you've been waiting for - the verdict......they do NOT taste like traditional chocolate chip cookies.  They were still pretty tasty but not so much that I would want one of these over the regular variety.  They were better frozen than they were fresh (which is kind of weird to me) and they are a nice sweet treat to have in the freezer for a chocolate chip cookie craving.  (Don't laugh, they happen more than you think.)  Not sure I would serve these to guests but for me, theyre not too bad.

Ciao!
